PSNI are currently at the scene of a shooting in the Killyclogher Road area of Omagh.
A spokesperson for the PSNI confirmed that “one man, a serving police officer, has been taken to hospital for treatment after being injured in a shooting incident at a sports complex just before 8pm this evening (Wednesday).
Condemning the attack, Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA Tom Elliott said, “Terrible news of a police officer being shot in Omagh this evening. Shot in front of young people at football coaching session. Despicable, cowardly action. No place in society for this”.
Omagh Councillor Stephen Donnelly also took to social media saying “I am as horrified as I am sick to my stomach at the reports emerging from Omagh this evening. I would urge everyone to stay clear of the area around Youth Sport.
Our thoughts are with the officer targeted and with his family and colleagues.
We in Omagh say: not in our name”.
The PSNI confirm that “more details will be issued when available”.
