Tonight, Friday January 27, will see the Mid Ulster District Council buildings lit up in purple to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day 2023.
The Burnavon Theatre, Cookstown, Hill of The O Neill and Ranfurly House, Dungannon, and The Bridewell, Magherafelt will all shine their lights in recognition and support of this significant international day.
This year’s theme is ‘Ordinary People’, highlighting the ordinary people who let genocide happen, the ordinary people who actively perpetrated genocide, and the ordinary people who were persecuted.
The poignant theme will also prompt us to consider how ordinary people, such as ourselves, can perhaps play a bigger part than we might imagine in challenging prejudice today.
The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust also encourages individual participation by ‘placing a candle safely in your window at 4pm on January 27’.
The aim is to ‘Light the Darkness’ across the nation ‘to remember those who were murdered for who they were’ and to ‘stand against prejudice and hatred today’.
